EVOnline at NERC 2020 - Nov 2

The EarthView team is proud to be part of the NERC 2020 online conference for social studies educators throughout the northeastern United States and beyond. The 50th anniversary of this illustrious gathering is taking place fully online. EarthView has been featured at several real-world NERC meetings, and we are very happy to continue the tradition.

As the awkward staging of the welcome message above suggests, Covid-19 safety was a key consideration as we made EVOnline field trip that will be part of our session on November 2. Please join us -- registration is free but is required by October 26 (one week in advance). Please join us for brief visits inside EarthView and on some of our EarthMap giant floor maps. This will be followed by a discussion of the use of such maps in learning geography and social studies, and will conclude with our team's recommendation of resources for online learning at all levels.

See the NERC 2020 page for registration and the World Beyond Borders page for details of our Session.

The EarthView team is pleased to be part of the annual meeting of the National Council for the Social Studies. Thousands of social-studies educators from throughout the United States are at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston to share ideas about teaching and learning. We have enjoyed meeting teachers from throughout New England at the NERC regional meetings for several years, and are pleased to now bring EarthView to the national community of teachers.

Moran Middle School at NERC! -- April 8-9

This is a guest post by geography students from Moran Middle School.

Hello! We are James H. Moran Middle School in Wallingford, Connecticut. We are in the 8th grade, and we entered an ACER contest to win tablets for our social studies classroom. The contest entry was supposed to be a video that explains why we deserve to win the tablets. We are one of the top ten finalists, if you could, please vote for Moran so we can discover more in our classroom! Vote here: http://moourl.com/votemoran Here is our video:

Some 8th grade Moran students attended NERC this year, and we set up our own tables and taught guests attending NERC how to use social media and other internet resources for educational purposes. We taught participants how to use Twitter, Instagram, Google Docs, Flickr, and we also did special interviews and a green screen that could take a picture with your favorite historical person!

It was very fun for us kids to teach adults how to use these things. Hopefully these teachers will take their new knowledge and spread it to their classrooms, maybe making the class easier and more enjoyable. We also hope that the people that visited us had just has much fun as we did. We also did a special interview inside of an inflated Earth. See the video

NERC 45, Sturbridge -- April 7-9

Learn more about Lat/Long (including how to look them up by address)

The EarthView team is very pleased to be joining our colleagues at NERC 45 -- the 45th annual Northeast Regional Conference of the National Council on Social Studies. This meeting takes place each year in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and brings together teachers of social studies from throughout New England.

On Saturday, EarthView was part of a program for science teachers on Cape Cod, and this week it is part of a program for social studies teachers from all over New England. This is because geography is a subject that has connections to many other subjects -- as the diagram below illustrates.

The relationship between geography and the other social studies subjects is so important that the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance will be hosting a Geography Policy Forum as part of the conference. We hope it will be just the first of many public forums held throughout Massachusetts over the next year.

2012-2013 EarthView Schedule

UPDATED January 30, 2013

EarthView has served close to 40,000 students -- all in small groups. This means that it moves around a lot! Most programs are limited to students in the host schools, as we keep a pretty busy schedule on program days. We provide this schedule, however, to help volunteers, reporters, and fellow educators to know when EarthView might be in their communities. If you would like to see EarthView during a school visit, please contact the school itself or the EarthView team.

All towns are Massachusetts and all dates are Fridays, unless noted otherwise. "Pending" means that a date is being negotiated but has not yet been finalized.
